Welcome, Bonjour, Gutentag and all that jazz. Thanks for taking the time to read the latest post on Sophiemags blog.
Now in case you didn’t notice, Sophiemags blog has recently had a revamp. My blog now is looking sleek and professional, smooth and consistant, and more importantly I am now self hosted!
Being completely honest I still don’t quite understand what that means, I think essentially rather than running my blog through WordPress, WordPress is now ran through my website?? But damn have I learnt a lot in the process so I thought today I would share that with you!
First up, RESEARCH– maybe do a bit of research about it all before going self hosted, because I still have so many questions, which could have been easily resolved if I had taken the time to look into it more.
Find your hosting platform– WordPress recommend using Jetpack which is the one I am running and it is quite easy to use, but before transferring everything over its useful to know which one suits your type of blog first.
Invest time- When going self hosted, there is a lot of time and effort put into sorting out all the different systems for you. It is not a quick job and requires a lot of time, so don’t do it if you are planning a quick easy transfer over, it’s not as simple as that. It is also quite technical, so if you know someone who is good with computers or even software, it is useful to get them to help you out!
Test/ experiment/ trial– When you have completed the transfer over and you are now self hosted, try every button on your blog, every post, and different layouts/styles to make sure everything works. For ages I didn’t have a follow button and comments were disabled and this was all down to a simple button I had missed!
That’s just a few tips I wanted to share with you, so if you are planning on going self hosted you know what to be aware of. Also if you do make the transition and need someone to help you through the panic, do give me a shout, I am no expert but I can confidently say I think I have figured it all out now!
Also if you do have any other tips feel free to share them in the comments section, I always have room to learn more!
Lots of love
