How to move house stress free

Essentially what I wanna talk to you about today, is how to move stress free. Yes that’s right I’m moving wahoooo! I have lived in my little studio flat for two years and now I am on a higher wage I can afford a bigger mortage and thus a bigger space, which comes with a garden for my little pooch and actual heating! ( no more silly gas heater which is dodgy af).

Of course, with every mile stone, it is important to blog about it so you can look back, but also I wanted to share my tips with you on how to move stress free. Also bearing in mind that I say stress free, but I was most definitely STRESSED, but I’m a bit of a stress head and a little bit always helps to stay motivated!

First up; before you start packing it is essential to have a clear out. I like to think I’m good at throwing away things and keeping tidy but until you need to pack everything away you realise how much stuff you have. Also, having a clear out while packing is a terrible idea, because that is managing several tasks at once which is also a big NOPE and complete unorganised mess. Some of my clothes I gave to charity, blankets and towels I have given to animal shelters because I didn’t want to throw away perfectly good items.

Secondly, list making! I love a good list as much as the next person, but nothing soothes my soul quite like a long colour coordinated list with dates! It is a great way to unscramble your brain of everything you need to do and what needs to go where.

My next tip is to pack gradually. Having a day of complete packing is mind numbing and also rushing. aint no body got time fo dat. Packing gradually helps you to keep on top of it and you can start with the least important items such as the garden or loft, things that aren’t used everyday and then over time move towards the items that need packing closer to your moving date.

Finally my most important tip (which I haven’t done enough of) is to STOP. Have a break, chill out, don’t do anything for an evening. Packing up all of your stuff into boxes and having a clear out is very draining, along with the endless documents that need signing and ridiculous legal jargon that no one understands. Let alone the amount of money involved is all very terrifying. Don’t over work yourself and have days of total self care, it is necessary to get yourself through this stressful period, because unfortunately buying a property does not happen quickly compared to renting.

If you are planning on moving I hope this blog post finds you well, and if not I hope its just been useful to think about for the future. I am currently trying to balance moving and travelling so my head is very dizzy, but everything is going aswell as it could do.

    Congrats on moving, I can see you’re really happy about it. Have you made the actual move yet or are you still in the process?

    Last year I moved back home from abroad and jesus, who knew how much STUFF you can accumulate in just a seemingly short amount of time.

    I too love making lists (and more importantly) lists with actual dates and deadlines. Otherwise, I tend to put things off or move them to the next day, then the next,… (and so on). So setting achievable deadlines for yourself is SO important!

    I also looooove what you wrote about just “stopping” for a second and taking some time for yourself in the midst of chaos. Moving can be such a stressful time, that self-care becomes even more important. And I also think that you tend to appreciate those last few days/ weeks more and remember them more fondly once you’ve moved.

    As for any other useful tipps… If you need some help assembling your furniture once you’re in your new place, throwing an “ikea/assembling party” is always great fun. Just invite a bunch of friends over, provide some good food and music and everyone can help together! It makes the whole process of getting settled into a new place so much more fun and less daunting. Also, it’s like a little pre-housewarming party!

      Thank you! yes I am super happy, in the process of moving currently so about six weeks or so to go!

      Thank you for agreeing, I am the total worst at remembering to stop and have self care so I think everyone needs that reminder! An assembling party that’s amazing idea!!!!

    I actually just recently moved house (for the first time!) and I will sadly admit that I was not as organised as this! I did manage to write labels on the boxes but everytime I went to write a list I got overwhelmed. (Which is weird for me!) Thank you for sharing and I hope you are enjoying your new place 🙂
